My newly pierced ears are painful and red, what should I do?Updated 21 days ago

Oh no! We're sorry that you're feeling discomfort.

Irritated or uncomfortable piercings are not unusual for new lobe piercings and may occur when aftercare steps are not followed carefully post piercing or if the pierced area is more sensitive.

When you have an infected piercing, the first thought might be to remove the jewellery. While that might seem like the best thing to do, it’s best to leave your jewellery in.

To effectively treat your piercing at home, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure your hands are clean and sanitised before handling the piercing.
  2. Leaving the piercing jewellery in place, soak a cotton ball in the Lovisa aftercare solution and clean around the area.
  3. Do not use alcohol or antibiotic ointments. These can further irritate the skin and slow the healing process.
  4. Do not remove the piercing.
  5. Spray the front and back of the piercing with the Lovisa aftercare spray, 2-3 times.
  6. To avoid the piercing site from swelling, ensure the piercing backing is fastened loosely.

Pillow cases hold a lot of bacteria so we recommend changing them every 2-3 days. It’s also important to clean your phone everyday as this also stores bacteria from make up and common germs – these can further irritate the piercing.

  • Avoid swimming until fully healed
  • Avoid getting make up, skin care, hair products or other chemicals near the piercing

If you’re infection is extremely irritated, oozing pus or very swollen, seek medical attention from your doctor.
